One Media founder Lai Chi-ying, who was charged with violating Hong Kong’s national security law, was granted bail by the court again today (24). The FTU Social Affairs Committee petitioned outside the High Court in the afternoon, criticizing the High Court for misjudging the possibility of the defendant absconding and arguing that the current bail conditions are too lenient and should be re-examined.
Two representatives of the FTU Social Affairs Committee petitioned outside the High Court of Hong Kong this afternoon, they held up a banner with the words “traitor with previous convictions requesting a re-examination of the bail guidelines,” arguing that the High Court’s admission of Lai Chi-ying’s application is a reckless disregard for the risk of absconding, with the possibility of alternative release, and asked the Department of Justice to appeal the ruling again as soon as possible.
Spokesman Mr. Cheung said that recently former Democratic Party member Xu Zhifeng abandoned bail and absconded, coupled with a number of suspects involved in riots and other serious crimes earlier attempted to abscond after being released on bail, the latest example is charged with rioting and assaulting a police officer, Form 5 student Tsang Chi-kin was even absent from court hearings and explicitly launched a flight, revealing a serious loophole in Hong Kong’s bail system.
He continued, since last year’s black violence incident and the National Security Law legislation, the social situation has changed, the trend of Hong Kong’s export of wanted criminals absconding fear of crime is on the rise, to ensure that Hong Kong’s judicial system is effective and not compromised, must be re-approved bail conditions guidelines.
