Republican U.S. Sen. John Thune (R-S.C.) speaks at a congressional news conference Dec. 15.
Some U.S. members of Congress plan to challenge the results of the Electoral College vote on Jan. 6. But Senate Republican Whip John Thune (R-S.C.) recently publicly mocked the congressional challenge. President Trump tweeted back, calling him “Mitch’s boy.
Thune and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) are teaming up to oppose the Republican senator’s challenge in Congress. Thune mocked the congressional challenge launched by the congressman on Monday (21) in the U.S. media Newsmax, saying that the plan will not succeed and will “go down like a shot dog” when it reaches the Senate.
In response, Trump commented on Twitter, “The Senate Republicans are quickly forgetting. If they didn’t have my support in the last election, they would be down 8 seats right now.”
Trump also named Thune as a “Republican in Name Only” (RINO), called him “Mitch’s boy” and predicted his political career would end in the 2022 election.
Some House Republicans are planning to challenge the Electoral College votes in six swing states (Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona and Nevada).
According to the English-language Epoch Times, nine House members, including Mo Brooks (R-Ariz.), have already publicly pledged to participate in the challenge. A written request from at least one more senator is needed to mount a successful challenge. So far, no senators have publicly committed to the challenge, but at least six have expressed interest in joining or are open to doing so.
Newsmax reports that Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz (R), who announced last week that he would join the challenge, disclosed that he had just spoken with newly elected Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R), who has also decided to join. Gaetz said Tuberville told him, “It’s time to fight.
