Trump at the Mar-a-Lago Resort in Florida
U.S. President Donald Trump (Trump) traveled with his family to the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Wednesday (Dec. 23) to spend the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. Before leaving the White House, Trump refused to sign the spending deal passed by the U.S. Congress, denouncing the bill as containing a large amount of unreasonable spending.
U.S. media outlet WPTV-5 West Palm Beach said the Trump family is expected to spend 10 days at the Sea Lake estate over the New Year.
Trump refused to sign Congress’ government spending bill before heading to the Sea Lake estate, decrying that “the new spending bill is more than 5,000 pages that no one in Congress has read because of its length and complexity – it’s called an epidemic relief bill, but it has little to do with epidemic (relief).”
“I’m asking Congress to amend this bill to raise the incredibly low $600 per person to $2,000, or $4,000 for a couple,” Trump said.
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was silent on the next course of action after Trump denounced the plan.
With Trump ostensibly not ready to sign a government spending bill, U.S. government funding is expected to stop before the New Year’s holiday. The U.S. Congress is currently discussing a seven-day continuing resolution to fund the government.
With the president on vacation, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has set an alert for airspace restrictions at Sea Lake Estates until Jan. 1.
