On Wednesday evening (Dec. 23), President Donald Trump personally floated the idea of a “special prosecutor” to investigate election fraud for the first time.
The president tweeted, “After seeing massive voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election, I disagree with the idea that a strong, fast and impartial special prosecutor is not needed.”
“This is the most corrupt election in our nation’s history and it must be carefully investigated!” He wrote.
This is the first time Trump has personally tweeted the idea of a special prosecutor to investigate election fraud. Wednesday was also Attorney General William Barr’s last day in office.
Trump previously announced that Deputy Attorney General Jeff Rosen would become acting attorney general after Barr’s departure. Rosen warned in August that overseas powers might try to influence the November election.
The Wall Street Journal reported Dec. 12 that Trump has expressed a desire to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate allegations of fraud in the November U.S. election and issues related to Hunter Biden, people familiar with the matter said.
On Dec. 10, the president shared a post on Twitter about at least 26 House Republicans calling on Trump to direct the attorney general to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate election fraud and irregularities.
More than two dozen Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives sent a letter to Trump on Dec. 9 urging him to direct Attorney General Barr to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate irregularities in the November presidential election.
The letter said, “The American people deserve this result: that the uncertainty surrounding the outcome of our election is finally resolved. But legitimate questions raised about voter fraud remain unanswered.”
The letter also alleges that the Justice Department under Barr has not taken sufficient action to address the issue.
In recent months, the president has expressed privately and publicly his growing frustration with Barr, according to aides. President Trump said in a Nov. 29 interview with Fox Business News that neither the U.S. Department of Justice or the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) “have seen any information about fraud or irregularities” since Election Day and “are missing in action and can’t tell you how far they’ve gone “.
In a recent interview, White House counsel Peter Navarro told Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo that he believes there must be a special prosecutor to investigate allegations of election fraud to “get to the bottom of everything.
Navarro said, “I think we need to lock up a lot of these voting machines because Antrim County, Michigan, has a 68 percent inaccuracy rate for these things.”
