Former U.S. Deputy National Security Advisor Yeh Wang Hui to be President of Radio Free Asia

Stephen Yates, a former deputy national security advisor to former Vice President John F. Cheney who is very friendly with Taiwan and speaks Chinese, has been appointed president of Radio Free Asia (RFA), a congressionally mandated station that broadcasts news and information to an Asian audience that does not have access to the free press.

The U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) issued a press release today announcing that Stephen Yates has taken over the presidency of Radio Free Asia (RFA).

USAGM Executive Director Michael Pack said in the press release that Yates has lived in Asia, is fluent in Chinese, and has worked on Asian affairs in government. He will be an excellent leader, especially at a time when the United States needs to be vigilant in dealing with authoritarian regimes, especially the Chinese Communist Party, which spreads falsehoods and disinformation.

He is happy to join Radio Free Asia. He noted that in the struggle against tyranny and aggression in the free world, facts and unafraid journalism are among the best tools. Radio Free Asia will play an important role in speaking the truth for those who are under scrutiny.

Yeh Wang Hui, who went to Taiwan as a Mormon missionary more than 30 years ago, is very friendly to Taiwan and travels frequently between the United States and Taiwan. He was also an advisor to Trump‘s transition team when he first entered the White House.

According to Radio Free Asia’s website, Radio Free Asia is a non-profit private company that broadcasts news and information to an Asian audience that does not have access to free press. Although authorized by the U.S. Congress and funded by annual federal grants, it is not a U.S. government agency and its employees are not federal or government employees.
