Stockholm is unusually dark in December this year, less than 1 hour of sunshine

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) said today that Stockholm has been unusually dark this December, with less than one hour of sunshine so far.

In Stockholm, the sun only rises above the horizon for about six hours a day at this time of year, and this year has been particularly dim, making Sweden, where confirmed cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) have soared in 2019, look especially bleak.

The sun rose in Stockholm at 8:33 a.m. this morning, but set at 2:48 p.m. and was covered in dark clouds all day.

Stockholm has not seen a ray of sunlight for an entire month, the last time in 1934.

Meanwhile, the northern city of Kiruna, located north of the polar circle, has not even seen a trace of the sun this December; SMHI meteorologist Linus Karlsson even said that the Kiruna sun set at 11:41 a.m. today, “and will be below the horizon for the rest of 2020.
