Samsung Expands Land Acquisition and Development Application Near Austin Wafer Fab in U.S.

Samsung Austin Semiconductor LLC recently expanded its local plant purchase and plans to develop the site, and the Austin City Council will consider whether to approve the purchase this week, according to a report by Built In.

According to the report, Samsung applied to Travis County, Texas, in late October to purchase 258 acres of land adjacent to its current main factory site, and although it has no immediate plans to expand the size of the site, it is applying for redevelopment, which the city council will consider on October 10.

Samsung officials were quoted by Korean media as confirming that Samsung has bought the land near the original plant and requested a change of use, but has not yet decided how to use it.

South Korea’s Samsung Group established an office in Austin in 1996 and has since expanded the site twice to accommodate its growing business, with Samsung claiming to have invested more than $17 billion in the local factory.

Samsung’s Austin foundry primarily processes 14nm, 28nm and 32nm wafers for customers. The plant does not currently utilize EUV lithography equipment to produce wafers below 7nm, but there have been rumors of plans to do so.

Samsung’s application for the plant expansion is likely to target TSMC’s business expansion in the United States. In May of this year, TSMC announced a $12 billion investment in a new 5-nanometer plant in Arizona.

According to market research firm TrendForce, Samsung’s foundry sales are expected to reach $3.715 billion in the fourth quarter of 2020, up 25% from the same period in 2019.
