President Trump has called on the Federal Senate to promptly consider his nomination to fill the vacancy of a U.S. Supreme Court justice. He also spoke highly of the important contributions that the late Justice Ginsburg made to the country.
The Associated Press says President Trump has called on the federal Senate to consider his upcoming nomination of a federal Supreme Court justice to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died Friday (Sept. 18) of complications from cancer.
The Associated Press says the White House is preparing to put forward nominations to fill the justice’s vacancy. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said after Justice Ginsburg’s death on the evening of Sept. 19 that he would schedule a Senate vote on any nomination Trump puts forward to fill the vacancy. Democrats say Republicans should follow the 2016 precedent of not considering Supreme Court justice nominations before the election.
President Trump tweeted on Saturday, “We were put in this position of power to make decisions for the people who so proudly elected us is important work. And the most important job of all has long been considered the selection of justices to the Supreme Court of the United States. We have that obligation, and we must not delay!”
Trump also spoke highly of Justice Ginsburg’s important contributions to the country. He praised Ginsburg, the second female justice in the history of the U.S. Supreme Court, as an inspiration to all Americans, in a message released on September 19.
Justice Ginsburg is known for her strong dissenting opinions on the Supreme Court, focusing on the powerful yet respectful argument that you can disagree with someone and still be happy with them,” the president’s message said. Justice Ginsburg’s work has helped improve equal treatment for women, ensure the rights of people with disabilities, and will continue to impact our country for generations to come.”
In his message, Trump ordered government offices, military installations, and overseas embassies and consulates across the U.S. to lower their flags to half-staff in mourning for Justice Ginsburg’s death.
