A rare hurricane-like storm known as “Medicane” hit central Greece today, leaving two dead and one missing.
Heavy rains and strong winds in the area north of the capital Athens damaged homes, stores and warehouses and trapped hundreds of people in flooded buildings.
The Mediterranean cyclone, Ianos, has already hit islands off the coast of western Greece yesterday, forcing flights and ferries to stop.
On the other hand, rescue teams today searched for a ship carrying 55 migrants after receiving a distress call yesterday, but shore units said the migrant ship may have changed course after it could not wait for help.
The city of Karditsa, about 300 kilometers north of Athens, was hard hit overnight, with mudslides, fallen trees and power outages.
Local media reported that a man was found dead on his farm in the area.
Firefighters said that in a neighboring town a woman was found dead in her flooded home; another woman was missing after her car was swept away by an overflowing river.
