U.S. Secretary of State Completes Visit to Taiwan to Establish Mechanism for Economic Dialogue

U.S. Secretary of State Cratchit’s three-day visit to Taiwan ended on September 19, Taiwan’s Minister of Economic Affairs Wang Meihua said that the two sides exchanged views on 5G clean networks, industry chain restructuring, and the new southbound policy, and established an economic dialogue mechanism to discuss details of the near future.

According to Taiwan’s Central News Agency, Wang said that the exchange was not a formal dialogue, but rather the two sides talked about economic cooperation matters at a strategic level. In the future, the U.S. will be the main convener of the economic dialogue between the two sides, while the Taiwanese will need to discuss it again.

Wang also emphasized that during the meeting, the Taiwanese side introduced Taiwan’s investment review mechanism, a topic that will also be discussed in future economic dialogues. Taiwan also made it clear that it has banned Huawei equipment since 4G and will stick to this direction in the development of the 5G network.

In addition, on the evening of September 18, TSMC founder Zhang Zhongmou was invited, as the sole representative of the business community, to participate in a dinner between Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen and a U.S. delegation. TSMC announced in May this year that it will go to the United States to set up a chip factory, the future will invest $ 12 billion.
