In a statement, the White House noted that U.S. President Donald Trump spoke on the phone today with new Japanese Prime Minister Kan Yoshihide, congratulating him on his appointment as prime minister and discussing the importance of pursuing a shared vision of a “free and open Indo-Pacific region.
The White House statement reads, “The two leaders discussed the importance of pursuing our shared vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific region, continuing to strengthen the U.S.-Japan alliance, and working together to strengthen the global economy.
After the U.S. and Japanese leaders spoke, Kan told reporters that he told Trump that Japan’s alliance with Washington was “the foundation for peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region,” Kyodo News reported.
During the 25-minute conversation, Kawakami and Kan also discussed the situation in North Korea.
