The 2020 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to scientists Harvey J. Alter, Michael Houghton and Charles M. Rice.
Thomas Perlmann, secretary general of the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet, said the three scientists received the award for their research and discoveries on the hepatitis C virus.
These advances will help find new ways to treat and cure hepatitis C. The Nobel Prize was awarded to the three scientists for their research and discovery of the hepatitis C virus. It is the 111th award in this category since 1901. The winners will share equally in the $1.1 million cash prize.
The Nobel prizes for physics, chemistry, literature and peace will be announced on a daily basis Tuesday through Friday. The prize in economics will be announced on Monday, October 12.
