Due to the side effects of blood clots, the Australian government today (17) revised its vaccination policy to recommend only the AstraZeneca Wuhan pneumonia (novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19) vaccine for people over 60 years old.
Australia originally recommended the AZ vaccine for people over the age of 50, but Health Minister Greg Hunt said the age group for the AZ vaccine was raised from 50 or older to 60 or older after the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) recommended Wednesday that the government revise vaccination guidelines.
The new restriction comes after a 52-year-old local woman died of blood clot problems after receiving the AZ vaccine. Over 3.6 million doses of AZ vaccine have been administered to people in Australia.
Australia will now offer the Pfizer vaccine to people under the age of 60. We will immediately open the Pfizer vaccine to people aged 40 to 59,” Hunter said, adding that about 2.1 million people aged 50 to 59 have not yet been vaccinated.
