An official press release from China stated that a total of 4,249 wild birds died in the H5N8 subtype of highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak in the Shenmu National Nature Reserve in Yulin City, Shaanxi Province.
China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs pointed out that on June 9, it received a report from the China Animal Disease Prevention and Control Center that the Chinese “National Avian Influenza Reference Laboratory” had collected and tested samples and determined that the 4,249 wild birds that died were all killed by the H5N8 subtype of avian influenza virus.
Chinese officials said that the Yulin municipal government in Shaanxi province immediately launched an “emergency response” mechanism, urgently launched follow-up disposal work, all the sick and dead wild birds “harmless treatment” and disinfection of the surrounding environment.
China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs mentioned that since this year, six outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza have been reported in China, all of which killed wild birds, and the outbreaks are in a “dotted distribution” situation, so there has not been a regional outbreak.
