U.S. Health Secretary Becerra held a videoconference with Taiwan’s Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung on May 21 and again expressed the new U.S. administration’s support for Taiwan on two fronts: support for Taiwan’s access to the Chinese Communist virus vaccine donated by the Biden administration; and support for Taiwan’s participation in the WHO and global health affairs.
Tsai tweeted on Twitter 21 to express her gratitude for the U.S. support. She wrote: “Thank you to our allies for standing up for the people of Taiwan and their right to health, and as a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan will continue to share our expertise with our allies and do our part to advance global health.”
Tsai also tweeted on Facebook on the 21st that she was very pleased to see progress in Taiwan-U.S. relations and appreciated the efforts of Taiwan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare and diplomatic staff for Taiwan’s international engagement and epidemic prevention.
Tsai wrote on Facebook that she has always attached great importance to the advancement of Taiwan-U.S. relations since she took office, and that it was difficult to make a breakthrough in Taiwan’s international engagement in the past, “but over the past five years, it has been proven that as long as the people of Taiwan work together and in the same direction, they can gain the attention of the international community and moreover develop deeper cooperative relationships with many countries.”
“During the meeting, the two sides further discussed ways to deepen Taiwan-U.S. cooperation in health care, public health, and science and innovation in response to the memorandum of understanding on cooperation signed last year. Becerra specifically thanked Taiwan for its assistance to the United States and also expressed two points of U.S. support: support for Taiwan’s access to vaccines and support for Taiwan’s expanded participation in the WHO and global health affairs.”
The Biden Administration recently announced that due to the improvement of the New Coronavirus (CCHV) epidemic in the United States, the U.S. government will donate 20 million doses of New Coronavirus (CCHV) vaccine produced by Moderna, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson to the international community on top of the 60 million doses of AstraZeneca’s New Coronavirus vaccine, and the ROC government said they are doing their best to to obtain this vaccine.
