No country can fight Wuhan pneumonia (a Chinese communist virus) alone, and this serious humanitarian disaster requires international cooperation to protect global health, human security and economic recovery, said Republic of China Representative to the United States Mei-Chin Hsiao on May 19. She called for Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Assembly (WHA) to fight the epidemic together.
In a submission to The National Interest on 19 May, Hsiao pointed out that the outbreak of coronavirus disease (CCP virus) in 2019 is one year old and the world is still facing a major impact of the epidemic. Despite Taiwan’s contribution to the prevention of the epidemic, Taiwan has not been invited to participate in the upcoming WHA on the 24th.
She counted the support for Taiwan’s participation in the WHO, including a joint statement by the foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7), a resolution by the French Senate, a statement by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in support of Taiwan, and the response of more than 300 members of Congress worldwide to a social media campaign by U.S. congressmen called “Let Taiwan Help. Let Taiwan Help” (#LetTaiwanHelp) campaign launched by members of Congress worldwide.
Hsiao pointed out that after the outbreak, Taiwan and public health officials, experts and scholars around the world actively exchanged information on epidemic prevention measures, and Taiwan took the initiative to promote international cooperation through the Global Cooperation and Training Framework (GCTF) symposium and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) High-Level Meeting on Health and Economy. Taiwan also provided substantial assistance during the epidemic, donating more than 54 million surgical masks, medical supplies and personal protective equipment to more than 80 countries and regions.
She said that as the world works to recover from the economic and social turmoil caused by the epidemic, Taiwan should be involved. Taiwan is an important partner in the restructuring of technology and global supply chains, and Taiwan can use its industrial competitiveness to promote cooperation in disease prevention, medicine and digital healthcare.
Hsiao said the epidemic knows no borders, no geopolitical, class or social distinctions. Taiwan is now facing a sharp increase in confirmed cases, and it is vital that no one is left behind in the global public health system.
She noted that no country can fight the epidemic alone, and that the most serious humanitarian disaster of the century calls for enhanced international cooperation. Taiwan is a willing and committed partner in the global effort to seek meaningful participation in the WHO and other international organizations, and “by involving Taiwan, more lives will benefit.
