Foreigners with health insurance in South Korea spent 60 billion dollars in 5 years, 70% of which was spent by the Chinese.

The National Health Insurance Corporation (NHIC), the agency responsible for implementing medical insurance in South Korea, recently released a report stating that over 70% of foreigners who have enjoyed medical insurance in South Korea in the past five years are Chinese and have received more than 2.4 trillion won in medical insurance premiums. It is necessary to take precautions against the misuse of South Korea’s health insurance resources for medical purposes.

According to Yonhap News Agency, data provided by the National Health Insurance Corporation’s report indicates that from 2015 to June of this year, foreigners from the top 20 countries in terms of health insurance benefits have received more than 3.4 trillion won. billion won and the U.S. 183.2 billion won.

In addition, there were about 330,000 foreigners who fraudulently claimed medical benefits totaling about 31.6 billion won, but only about half of that amount, 16.1 billion won, was successfully recovered by the government.

Kang Ki-yoon, a member of the Health and Welfare Committee of the South Korean Association and a member of the opposition National Power Party, said that some foreigners who entered the country for medical purposes and left the country immediately after receiving medical insurance benefits in South Korea or returned home after receiving health insurance subsidies for a short stay in the country are now entering the country, so it is necessary to establish preventive measures such as a period of residence.
