Wuhan pneumonia (novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19) continues to affect the world, the Thai national women’s volleyball team was scheduled to participate in the World Volleyball League on the 25th of this month, but 26 people were diagnosed before the match, the Thai Volleyball Association had to announce the withdrawal of the match. All the players and staff of the women’s volleyball team had been injected with the first dose of China Kexing vaccine on April 29, but the vaccine could only effectively improve the protection rate to more than 50% after 2 weeks of the second injection, and the protection effectiveness was only 16% within two weeks after the first injection.
According to foreign media reports, the Thai women’s volleyball team members and staff were injected with the Chinese Kexing vaccine on April 29, and on May 12, 22 people were tested positive for the virus before the match, and the number increased to 26 during the observation and treatment period. In response, Thailand’s National Epidemic Center said that even if vaccinated, there is no guarantee that they will not be infected, and it is hoped that all parties will take this as a warning not to relax epidemic prevention measures because of vaccination.
FIVB gives grace period to participate if tested again
The local physician also pointed out that, according to a Chilean study, the effectiveness of the Chinese vaccine was only 16% after the first 2 weeks of administration, and only 67% after 2 weeks of the second injection. While some other vaccines offer 60 or 70% protection within 3 weeks after the first shot and 70 to 75% 2 weeks after the second shot, the point is that no vaccine offers 100% protection.
The Thai women’s volleyball team is ranked 16th in the world. After the announcement of the withdrawal, the FIVB believes that the positive test of Thai women volleyball players is not necessarily a confirmed diagnosis, probably because it is related to the vaccination not long ago, so the date of grace, expecting them to test again, as long as they pass it can participate.
