GIGABYTE claims low quality of Chinese OEMs, named by the Communist Youth League, sparking boycott

GIGABYTE, a major motherboard manufacturer, released an advertisement for its notebooks in China saying that “Chinese OEMs have low cost and low quality,” and was named today by the Communist Youth League, which asked, “Who gave you so much courage?” The boycott was immediately triggered, with Jingdong, Tmall and other e-commerce platforms taking their notebook products off the shelves one after another.

GIGABYTE then issued two apologies on its official Weibo account, saying that it would carry out a comprehensive overhaul to comply with “China’s national interests” and emphasizing that GIGABYTE has always supported the “One China” position.

The official microblog of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League posted a screenshot of an official GIGABYTE brand advertisement this morning, asking rhetorically, “GIGABYTE, who gave you so much courage?”

In this posting, the YCL specifically mentions the GIGABYTE ad as “insisting on being made in Taiwan with strict quality control. Unlike other brands that choose a low cost, low quality approach, and hire Chinese OEMs to manufacture their products,” the quote is marked in red, without much explanation, but it is clear that this quote is the “original sin” that GIGABYTE was named for.

After the release of the article, a large number of netizens left comments below or forwarded the article, calling for a full boycott, and some netizens said “Gigabyte will soon taste the iron fist of the (Chinese) consumer.”

It was observed that Chinese e-commerce leaders, including Jingdong and Tmall, have successively taken down GIGABYTE-related notebook products, with only hard drives, graphics cards and other products still on the shelves.

After the incident was delayed throughout the morning, GIGABYTE issued an apology statement at 12:30 p.m. through the official microblog of its gaming laptop brand “AORUS GIGABYTE Gaming”, saying, “Some of the textual content released on the official website is seriously inconsistent with the facts, which is due to the company’s internal mismanagement, which has brought discomfort to everyone. I sincerely apologize for the discomfort caused by this.

The statement also mentioned that “GIGABYTE has been doing business in mainland China for more than 20 years, and will deeply review the inappropriate remarks and carry out corrective actions to comply with national principles.”

At 1:30 p.m., “AORUS GIGABYTE Gaming” issued another statement, emphasizing that “GIGABYTE has always adhered to the ‘One China’ position and opposed any form of divisive behavior and speech. GIGABYTE has always adhered to the ‘One China’ position and opposed any form of secessionist behavior and speech.
