Nepalese authorities and health care workers are now struggling to contain a serious exacerbation of the new crown outbreak as a second wave of the deadly epidemic in neighboring India spreads toward Nepal.
The 1,850-kilometer open border between Nepal and India, which people often cross for work and to see family members, has been closed to Indian flights to prevent the country from becoming the second India.
In Nepalgunj (Nepalgunj) adjacent to India’s Northern Province (Uttar Pradesh) Bheri Hospital, medical staff are working around the clock as the influx of patients continues to grow.
Badri Chapagain, a doctor at Bheri Hospital, said, “The hospital is overcrowded and we have to treat patients in every corner of the hospital.”
Nepal has seen a daily surge in cases over the past three weeks, with 9,023 new confirmed cases reported on the 6th, a single-day high in the country. According to official figures, about 3,500 people have died in Nepal since the outbreak began, an increase of 400 deaths in the past two weeks alone.
Hemanta Chandra Ojha, a member of Nepal’s Epidemiology and Disease Control Division, told AFP: “Medical facilities have been flooded with symptomatic patients … and the situation is likely to worsen in the coming days. The situation could worsen in the next few days.”
Ojha noted, “Our oxygen supply is fine, but the number of ventilators and intensive care units needed to treat seriously ill patients is insufficient.”
