Burma’s state-run media reported on August 8 that military leaders have characterized the rival Burmese National Unity Government (BNG) as a terrorist organization and blamed it entirely for the recent bombings, arson and killings.
Reuters quoted a statement from Myanmar Radio and Television (MRTV) as saying that the BNG “has carried out terrorist attacks in many places. They have thrown bombs, set fires, murdered and threatened to destroy the administrative machinery of the government.”
Under Burma’s Anti-Terrorism Law, groups characterized as terrorist organizations are prohibited from recruiting members and people are not allowed to have contact with them. The Burmese military has previously charged dissidents with treason.
The Committee of Representatives of the Burmese Union Parliament (CRPH), composed of former members of the National League for Democracy (NLD) parliament, announced the formation of a National Unity Government (NUG) on April 16.
The CRPH said that the NUG was established in accordance with Article 19 of the Union Democratic Charter drafted and published by the organization on March 31, 2021, and declared Win Myint as president of the NUG, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi as senior minister of state, Tuvala Hira as vice president, and Man Win Khaidan as prime minister.
