The Indian government released a list of 5G experimental network equipment suppliers on the same day that will allow Internet mobile operators to conduct 5G trials with equipment makers such as Ericsson, Nokia and Samsung’s network subsidiaries, but the list does not mention Chinese companies such as Huawei and ZTE, Reuters reported on May 4.
In a statement, India’s Ministry of Communications said a number of companies under India’s major operator Reliance Industries will work with state-owned telecoms firms to conduct trials in urban, rural and combined urban-rural areas areas. But Huawei and another smaller Chinese rival, ZTE, were not among the participating network equipment suppliers mentioned in the statement for the trial.
Although India did not name Chinese companies to participate in the six-month trial, there is no explicit ban on Chinese companies supplying 5G equipment to operators as the trial is designed to test 5G equipment and technology in different environments, the report said.
However, two Indian government officials told Reuters earlier that the Indian government could ban mobile operators from using telecoms equipment made by Huawei under procurement rules that will come into effect in June.
