The official release of China’s monthly income of migrant workers, netizens spit: I dragged the leg

The National Bureau of Statistics released the “2020 Migrant Worker Monitoring Report” on April 30, saying that the average monthly income of migrant workers nationwide last year was 4,072 yuan (RMB, the same below), causing netizens to lament the gap between the rich and the poor, and many said “I’m sorry I’m dragging my feet”, questioning the official figures.

According to the report, the average monthly income of migrant workers in 2020 will be RMB 4,072, an increase of RMB 110 or 2.8% over 2019, with the average monthly income of migrant workers employed abroad being RMB 4,549, an increase of RMB 122 or 2.7% over 2019; the average monthly income of migrant workers who stay in their hometowns will be RMB 3,606, an increase of RMB 106 or 3% over 2019.

Li Keqiang, Premier of the Communist Party of China State Council, publicly stated in May last year that 600 million people in China earn only 1,000 yuan a month. Although he did not elaborate on the composition of these low-income people. But nearly 300 million migrant workers have always been at the bottom of the income pyramid. Their employment and income are in a precarious state. In particular, last year’s viral impact of the Chinese Communist Party caused a large number of small enterprises to close down, making it more difficult for migrant workers to find employment, and many of them even fell into a precarious state.

Therefore, after the official report declared that the average monthly income of migrant workers exceeded 4,000 yuan, netizens quickly exploded. Some people criticized that with such a low income, it is difficult for migrant workers to live in big cities at all, and it is a lie to get rid of poverty comprehensively; others lamented that their income is not as good as migrant workers and questioned the authenticity of the official data. In addition, there are also netizens complaining about the high income in the entertainment industry, believing that the polarization between the rich and the poor is too disparate.

“Sorry, I pulled down the average again.”

“I should have known not to do it, go back to the countryside to plant.”

“Sorry for dragging the farmers down.”

“Ah this, as far as I know many of our university teachers here do not reach this salary level”

“Farmers earn a thousand a month, it’s true, and there may not even be a thousand.”

“Being average, deducting social security pension insurance, etc., to the hands of about 3500, and then deducted from the food and drink rent, 2000 on the head to hold a big smile.”

“2017 to 2019 in Guangzhou, a sauce state-owned enterprises work, pre-tax monthly income of 4,000 yuan ~ 4,600 yuan. And the monthly salary fluctuation also depends on the mood of the leadership… A first-tier city, the average monthly salary of a state-owned enterprise grassroots employee group is low like this, can still expect migrant workers can be highly paid.”

“A migrant worker’s monthly income of 4,000 yuan, an artist’s income for a day is a migrant worker’s income for 40 years, where does the problem lie?”

Others simply said angrily, “What kind of bullshit country.”

In addition to income, this report also pointed out that the total number of migrant workers in the country was about 286 million last year, down 5.17 million or 1.8 percent from 2019. Among them, about 170 million migrant workers went out, 4.66 million less than the previous year, down 2.7%; about 116 million local migrant workers, 510,000 less than the previous year, down 0.4%.

At the same time, there is an aging trend of migrant workers, with an average age of 41.4 years old, 0.6 years higher than before.
