A panel of experts from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) met Friday (23) and recommended that the authorization for emergency use of U.S. drugmaker Johnson & Johnson’s New Crown vaccine be reinstated, arguing that the benefits of vaccination outweigh the risk of rare blood clots. The U.S. government will study the recommendations and decide on the next step.
Bell, a female professor in the Department of Global Health at the University of Washington in Seattle and a member of the CDC’s expert committee, said the benefits of vaccination outweigh the risks, both from a population-wide and individual perspective.
The CDC is investigating two new cases of blood clots after Johnson & Johnson vaccination, including a woman in her 50s in Oregon who died 2 weeks after developing a severe blood clot with low platelet levels after having received the shot before authorities suspended the vaccine, the report said. Another woman in Texas also developed a blood clot after receiving the vaccine and remains in the hospital.
