The German parliament on Friday (23) passed a new bill involving cybersecurity to safeguard critical infrastructure such as mobile communications or energy networks, potentially excluding Chinese telecommunications equipment maker Huawei from local 5G network construction.
The legislation authorizes the Interior Department to prohibit some manufacturers that are controlled by foreign governments or have been involved in activities deemed dangerous from supplying security-related equipment parts. Christian Democrat MP Mathias Middelberg said that security policy has now become an important consideration as 5G networks develop. Another CDP MP, Christoph Bernstiel, said the new law allows the government to make technical and political assessments of all suppliers.
The U.S. accused Huawei of close ties with the Chinese government and espionage, so it imposed tough sanctions on Huawei and called on allies to join.
