The official death toll rose to five after a bombing yesterday at a luxury hotel in southwestern Pakistan where the Communist Party ambassador was staying, claimed by the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan. The Taliban said the attack was aimed at Pakistani security officials. The Chinese Communist Party ambassador, who was staying at the hotel with a delegation, escaped death, AFP said.
A bomb attack on a top hotel in southwestern Pakistan has exploded, killing five people. The Taliban claimed the crime, according to a Central News Agency report today. A spokesman for Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) said in a statement release that “the suicide bomber hit security officials as he had planned.” According to police, the bombing was detonated by a homemade bomb and killed security officials and hotel staff.
The bombing yesterday at the luxury hotel where the Communist ambassador was staying in southwestern Pakistan was officially announced as having occurred in Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan province, in the parking lot of the Serena, a national luxury hotel chain.
According to police, the bombing was detonated by a homemade bomb, killing security officials and hotel staff. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said the bombing was a “terrorist attack” and that members of the Communist delegation were out of the hotel for an event when the bomb was detonated.
Gu Wenliang, an agricultural attaché at the Chinese Embassy, told the Global Times that the bomb detonated 10 minutes before they were expected to return to the hotel.
Khuda Baksh, a hotel security guard, said, “I was walking in the parking lot when I suddenly heard a loud bang and the ground shook under my feet.” He told AFP, “Everyone ran as fast as they could, and then I lost consciousness.”
The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan has for years launched deadly attacks on urban centers inside Pakistan from its headquarters on the border with Afghanistan.
But a major military offensive in 2014 largely destroyed the command and control structure of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, Central News Agency said, resulting in a major reduction in insurgent violence within Pakistan.
