The European Values Center for Security Policy, a Czech think tank, signed a contract with the Representative Office of the Republic of China in the Czech Republic on April 20 and plans to settle in Taiwan in the second half of this year to cooperate with Taiwan’s relevant units to deal with the penetration and influence of the Chinese Communist Party.
The European Values Center for Security Policy is a leading Czech think tank established to defend democracy in Central and Eastern Europe and to prevent Russian polarization and infiltration of local societies. The think tank’s reports are valued by security agencies and congresses in Europe and the United States.
Since the Chinese Communist Party is quite active in Central and Eastern Europe, its infiltration and influence on local politics and media has also become the focus of the think tank’s research in recent years.
Jakub Janda, head of the European Center for Value-Based Security Policy, said that Taiwanese institutions have been studying and resisting the Chinese Communist regime for decades and know more about Chinese Communist intervention, and that Europeans can learn from Taiwan.
He noted that the purpose of establishing a base in Taiwan is to introduce Taiwan’s valuable knowledge to Europe, to promote exchanges between Europe and Taiwan on security and defense-related matters, and to let other European think tanks know that cooperation with Taiwan’s friendly democratic partners couldn’t be more normal.
The Taipei office of the European Values and Security Policy Center will be headed by Richard Kraemer. Kraemer, an expert on the Western Balkans and the Middle East and formerly with the National Endowment for Democracy, looks forward to playing a bridging role between the governments and civil society of Taiwan, Europe, and the United States in the future.
Kramer said that since the first elections in the 1990s, Taiwan has overcome many major challenges to become the strongest democracy in the region, a testament to the people’s commitment to democratic values and perseverance in the face of threats from Beijing.
The European Values and Security Policy Center emphasized that this is the first time a private European think tank has landed in Taipei, and that the Taipei office, to be inaugurated in the second half of the year, will focus on the influence of the Chinese Communist Party as its research.
