Three jam jars filled with gold bars and a large amount of gold coins worth more than 600,000 euros were recently found by accident in an old house to be renovated in eastern France. The people who sold their ancestral property only last year will not have the chance to share this wealth, although they had previously heard rumors that the family had hidden treasures.
Petit, the mayor of Moray, France, said the three-story building in the center of town once housed four siblings, none of whom had children. in 2020, when the last of them died in his 90s, one of his relatives offered to sell the building to the town hall for 130,000 euros.
Like many other towns in France, Moray is looking to buy and renovate old buildings to attract people back to its vacant city center.
When the New Crown epidemic broke out in France in the spring of 2020, the country imposed a lockdown and workers’ plans to clean up the buildings were put on hold. But because of Moray’s illustrious past as a historic manufacturing center for watches and eyeglasses, officials wanted to check the building for any items of historical value.
Petty says: “Three jars filled with gold bars sat behind many other items on the shelves and everyone was shocked.”
A second surprise was recently discovered in the house. Petty revealed that a safe was found in a cupboard that was pried open and contained gold coins.
Petty noted that the relative who sold the house was cool with the discovery. The house is now owned by City Hall. The seller had heard rumors of treasure hidden in the family, but did not believe it was still there.
