The UK Minister for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport issued a Public Interest Intervention Notice (PINA) on the 19th for Pfizer Semiconductor’s acquisition of Arm Semiconductor, confirming that “he is intervening in the merger on national security grounds. The deal is worth $40 billion. Pfizer shares fell about 3% in the U.S. pre-market on the 26th.
The British government said it will ask the competition and market authorities to report on the impact of the merger on competition and national security by July 30.
The statement noted that the minister has taken into account the recommendations of all investment security-related officials when making this decision. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) will report on the deal from a competition and national security perspective, and the CMA will complete its report and submit it to the minister by midnight on July 30.
