More than 139 million cases have been diagnosed worldwide, and nearly 2.99 million people have died from the disease.

AFP aggregated official data showing that at least 2.98 million 7891 people died worldwide from 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and at least 139 million 8120 cases were confirmed as of 10:00 GMT 16 (6:00 p.m. on Taiwan 16).

The outbreak began in China in December 2019, and the vast majority of those infected have recovered to date. However, some people continue to feel symptoms for weeks or even months after recovery.

These figures are based on daily statistics provided by national health authorities and do not include subsequent re-estimates from the statistical units of three countries – Russia, Spain and the United Kingdom – and are only a fraction of the actual total number of infections, as many mildly ill or asymptomatic patients remain undetected.

On the 15th, 13,646 new deaths and 809,849 confirmed cases were reported worldwide. According to the data, the countries with the highest number of new deaths were Brazil (3,560), India (1,185), and the United States (974), in that order.

The United States remains the country with the most severe epidemic, with 565,289 deaths and 31,495,652 confirmed cases.

Other countries with severe outbreaks include Brazil (365,444 deaths and 13,740,668 confirmed cases), Mexico (211,213 deaths and 2,295,435 confirmed cases), India (174,308 deaths and 14,291,917 confirmed cases) and the United Kingdom (127,191 deaths and 4,380,976 confirmed cases).

As a percentage of the population, the Czech Republic had the highest mortality rate, with 264 deaths per 100,000 people, followed by Hungary (254), Bosnia-Herzegovina (235), Montenegro (225) and Bulgaria (214).

Regionally, there were 1,016,003 deaths and 47,445,360 confirmed cases in Europe, 852,118 deaths and 26,810,010 confirmed cases in Latin America and the Caribbean, and 588,779 deaths and 32,589,214 confirmed cases in the United States and Canada.

In Asia, there were 292,169 deaths and 20,566,289 confirmed cases; in the Middle East, there were 120,787 deaths and 7,161,469 confirmed cases; in Africa, there were 117,015 deaths and 4,397,613 confirmed cases; and in Oceania, there were 1020 deaths and 49,992 confirmed cases.
