Foreign media reported that Jack Ma, co-founder of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group, appeared at an international conference on Wednesday after months of seclusion, but he did not speak.
A video conference of the Board of Supervisors of the Russian Geographical Society was held at Moscow State University on the same day, said an announcement by the Russian Geographical Society. The meeting, chaired by Russian President Vladimir Putin, summarized the results of the body’s work last year and presented its plans for this year.
Rosatom reported that Ma, who has not appeared in public for a long time, showed up at the two-hour-long meeting, but never spoke.
Ma’s last public appearance was several months ago. At the end of January, he video-connected with 100 rural teachers on the 8th day of the Lunar New Year.
The Wall Street Journal previously quoted people familiar with the matter as saying that Ma’s speech late last year angered state leaders and Xi Jinping personally ordered a halt to the planned IPO of Alibaba’s Ant Group. Since then, Ma has been behaving in a low-key manner.
