On Your Knees? “Good Cotton Society Quietly Takes Down “Statement on Human Rights Persecution in Xinjiang”

A number of well-known brands around the world have fallen out with China over “Xinjiang cotton” because of a statement released last year by the Good Cotton Institute (BCI) accusing Xinjiang of human rights abuses and forced labor, but after a series of controversies, the statement is no longer available on the official website. It is suspected to have been taken down.

The statement issued by the BCI last August said that the organization would stop all activities in Xinjiang because of the persecution of human rights and forced labor in the region, and that multinational brands including H&M, Nike and Uniqlo were members of the organization. Otherwise, they will be boycotted.

After the incident, first by the BCI Shanghai representative office, said that the Chinese team in strict compliance with the organization’s audit principles, never found the incident of forced labor, stressed that “BCI Shanghai representative office will maintain communication with Xinjiang implementation partners to maintain the sustainable development of the supply chain. The statement has now been removed from the official website.
