Canadian Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino announced Wednesday that in order to strengthen the fight against the new pneumonia epidemic and restore social and economic order, the Canadian government will increase a total of 90,000 quotas for foreign workers who already have temporary status in Canada, work in health care and other essential jobs, as well as Canadian graduates. Dicino stressed that Canada is built by immigrants, and he believes that new immigrants will contribute to society. (By Derek Fong)
Mendicino announced the plan at a press conference on Wednesday. Under the plan, foreign students will be eligible to apply for this new quota if they have attended and graduated from an eligible post-secondary program within the past four years (i.e., after January 2017) and are currently working. They do not need to be in a specific occupation.
The program is also open to foreign temporary workers with at least one year of experience in 40 health care-related industries to apply. In addition to the health care industry, authorities have listed 95 other jobs in various fields, including food production, as eligible industries.
The time-limited immigration pathway will accept applications from May 5 and remain open until Nov. 5 or until the target is reached.
Mendicino said, “Our message to them is simple: your status may be temporary, but your contribution is lasting – and we want you to stay.”
The Liberal government has made immigration a key part of Canada’s economic recovery after the new crown epidemic, with plans to take in 401,000 permanent residents by 2021. Immigration figures fell sharply by 45.7 per cent last year to just 185,130.
Under the new plan, 90,000 students will account for nearly a quarter of the overall immigration target this year.
