First U.S. government official in Biden’s cabinet to visit China

The U.S. State Department announced on the 13th that John Kerry, the presidential envoy on climate change, will visit Shanghai, China, and Seoul, South Korea, from the 14th to the 17th; this will be the first Biden administration official to visit China.

Kerry has just finished a trip to the Middle East and Bangladesh, and President Biden has invited 40 heads of state to an online meeting at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) summit, where Chinese Communist Party President Xi Jinping, whom Biden called “no democracy in his bones,” and “executioner “Russian President Vladimir Putin was on the invitation list.

Kerry visited China ahead of the heads of state summit.

The Washington Post reports that Kerry’s trip will hopefully shape bilateral cooperation on climate change at a time when U.S.-China relations are at a high level of tension.

The WaPo cites sources familiar with the matter as saying that Kerry will meet with China’s Special Representative for Climate Change Xie Zhenhua in Shanghai.
