India’s Wuhan pneumonia (novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19) epidemic exploded, today (11) announced a massive increase of 152,879 confirmed cases, a single-day high, and now every six new cases in the world has one case in India. The Indian government launched a “vaccine festival” today, vigorously appealing to the public vaccination, hoping to curb the epidemic.
The government is accelerating vaccinations and considering stricter restrictions to slow the spread of the virus. According to Ministry of Health data, India has seen an increase of 152,879 cases in the past 24 hours, with a cumulative total of 13,358,805 confirmed cases, the third most in the world, after the United States and Brazil; 869 new deaths, the highest in five months, with a cumulative total of 169,275 deaths.
Snowball! 6 times a week to set a new single-day record
Reuters points out that with today’s announcement, India has set a new record for the highest number of single-day cases six times in the past week; at the same time, India now has the highest average number of new cases per day in the world, with one out of every six new cases in the world coming from India.
To curb the outbreak, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a four-day “Tika Utsav/vaccine festival” on Sunday, urging eligible people to get vaccinated as soon as possible.
India has opened the vaccine in order for health care workers and frontline workers, citizens over 60 years old or people under 60 years old who are at high risk to receive the vaccine, and from the first of this month, the general public over 45 years old can receive the vaccine.
India began its vaccination program in mid-January and has administered more than 100 million doses of vaccine, second only to the United States and China. Although the vaccination is currently limited to about 400 million people out of a population of 1.35 billion, several states have complained of vaccine shortages.
