Myanmar security forces kill 80 people in two days

Latest reports say Burmese security forces have killed more than 80 people demonstrating against the military government in two days. Meanwhile, people in southeast Burma continue to stage street protests calling for the restoration of civilian rule.

“Myanmar Now news, witnesses and the Aid Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) said Myanmar security forces killed protesters Thursday and Friday in Bago, about 65 kilometers northeast of Myanmar’s largest city, Yangon. Burmese security forces fired grenades at protesters in the city of Bago, about 65 kilometers northeast of Yangon, killing them on Thursday and Friday, witnesses and AAPP said.

“Burma Today said 82 people were killed, while the Aid Association for Political Prisoners said “more than 80 anti-coup protesters were killed by security forces on Friday.”

The United Nations said in a statement Saturday that it had received reports that Burmese security forces had used heavy artillery against civilians in Pegu city and that injured people were not being treated. “The violence must stop immediately,” the statement said, “and we call on security forces to allow medical teams to attend to the wounded.”

The military government did not comment on a report by Reuters citing Myanmar’s Shan News news agency that a coalition of ethnic Burmese forces opposed to the junta’s rule attacked a police station in Naungmon village on Saturday, killing at least 10 policemen.

Protesters reportedly resumed street protests against the junta in Launglone and the neighboring city of Dawei on Saturday, despite a crackdown by the junta.

“The Political Prisoners’ Aid Association previously said 618 people have been killed since the Feb. 1 military coup in Burma and that martial law has been imposed in towns and cities across the country.
