Zhong Nanshan said that China is now at a very critical moment, as the variation of virus strains brings challenges to the prevention and control of the epidemic, and the most urgent task is to increase the vaccination rate.
According to CCTV microblogging news, Zhong Nanshan, director of the National Clinical Medical Research Center for Respiratory Diseases on the mainland, hosted a lecture titled “New Crown Prevention and Control Strategies and Vaccine Development” at the 100th anniversary of Xiamen University yesterday (6), calling on the public to get vaccinated as soon as possible, otherwise there will be another outbreak of the epidemic.
Zhong Nanshan said that China is now at a very critical moment, with the variation of virus strains posing challenges to the prevention and control of the epidemic, and that the most urgent task is to increase the vaccination rate.
According to the website of China’s National Health Commission, as of April 4, 2021, a cumulative total of 13,997,000 doses of vaccination against the CCP virus had been reported across the country. However, due to its large population base, China’s vaccination rate is much lower than that of the United Kingdom and the United States, and herd immunity can only occur when the CCP virus vaccination rate reaches 70-80%.
In a previous interview with CGTN, Gao Fu, director of the CDC, said that China should take the lead in achieving herd immunity in the face of the spread of the global epidemic, and that if it waits for herd immunity in foreign countries, it will instead be in a state of no immunity and the epidemic may break out again
Gao also said that according to the current vaccine production, China should be able to reach 70 to 80 percent of the vaccination rate for the CCP virus by the end of this year to the middle of next year, which means 900 to 1 billion people will be vaccinated.
With the recent resurgence of the outbreak at China’s Yunnan border, Shanghai tightened its epidemic prevention measures again on June 6: people passing through or coming from high-risk areas of China will be quarantined for 14 days upon arrival in Shanghai, while those from medium-risk areas will be subject to 14 days of community health management.
