CPC Central Committee orders Zhao Ziyang’s family to move out of his former residence

Although the late former General Secretary of the Communist Party Zhao Ziyang has been dead for more than a decade, every year on his death anniversary and afterlife there are visits to his former residence in Beijing’s Fuqiang Hutong by former members and supporters. It is understood that the General Office of the CPC Central Committee has informed Zhao Ziyang’s family that they must move out before the deadline, but they will not be asked to leave before July 1 based on political considerations.

Zhao Ziyang’s son Zhao Erjun and his daughter Wang Yannan and other family members paid their respects at the cemetery in Changping, Beijing, on Sunday morning (4). Authorities posted guards at the intersection leading to Zhao Ziyang’s grave and barred others from entering. It is understood that a total of more than 20 family members and friends to the cemetery to lay flowers, once served as Zhao Ziyang’s political secretary Bao Tong also sent a wreath, the whole process of worship more than 20 minutes, the whole time someone monitoring.

On October 18, 2019, Zhao Ziyang and his wife’s ashes were buried together at the cemetery in Changping, while before that Zhao Ziyang’s ashes were stored for a long time at his former residence in a quadrangle at No. 6 Fuqiang Hutong in Beijing. Every year, the Qingming Festival, as well as his death anniversary and birthday, there are a large number of old deployments and villagers to pay their respects.

It is understood that the courtyard is now mainly the home of Zhao Ziyang’s daughter Wang Yannan’s family. Independent media personality Gao Yu quoted sources as saying that they received a verbal notice from the General Office of the CPC Central Committee last year asking them to move out before the deadline, and that Wang Yannan and the others were expected to be assigned to another place to live.

It’s not too easy to find a place for them, Gao Yu said. The State Council Administration is making arrangements, but once arranged, they may live with many senior cadres. If you get him a private residence, it will be more trouble to monitor. The latest I know is that the family has already started to organize things . Anyway, let’s do it little by little. How much stuff does a family have? It’s a lot of stuff for one family, so let’s pack it up little by little.

Gao Yu described the relocation of a large number of Zhao Ziyang’s belongings, including documents and books, from his former residence as not an easy task. At present, every room of the Zhao family is being boxed and packed, but it is estimated that Wang Yannan’s family will not move out before July 1.

Gao Yu said: You get a former party general secretary swept off his feet before this 100th anniversary (of the founding of the Communist Party of China), and it’s not a face-saving thing. The party celebration is a very happy event. Zhao Ziyang’s former residence is more than 30 years old and must be implicated in June 4. The world’s public opinion again has to start with how Zhao Ziyang did not advocate shooting, hoping to solve the problem of the school movement on the road to democracy and the rule of law. Old accounts and new accounts have to be turned over enough. This is the 100th anniversary of the party is simply not allowed to mention things. Why can’t you tolerate these three months?

Ji Feng, a leader of the 1989 academic movement who is close to Zhao’s family, said that for the authorities, letting Zhao Ziyang’s family move out of Fuqiang Hutong is a way to eliminate their worries.

Ji Feng said: “It has become a place of worship. It is the shrine for veneration, with a permanent shrine. People who petition, defend their rights and pay respects go there. The authorities are afraid of causing unnecessary trouble, just like what Lin Zhao tomb is a reason.

Zhao Ziyang lived here for sixteen years during his lifetime. Jifeng said it is difficult to estimate the future use of the courtyard.

Ji Feng said: in fact, it is only his former residence, a temporary habitat after he was deported. The authorities will not make it a memorial to Zhao Ziyang unless they re-evaluate him as a person in a few years, at least not now.

Wang Yanjun, former deputy editor-in-chief of Yanhuang Chunqiu magazine, said that Zhao Ziyang’s former residence belongs to the central government and cannot be sold to individuals. In principle, as soon as the leader and his spouse die, the house will be repossessed and children cannot inherit it.
