A team of experts from the World Health Organization visited Wuhan, China, on January 14 to investigate the source of Wuhan pneumonia, beating the drums beforehand and appearing to have secured China’s cooperation for an objective and independent investigation. It was also revealed during that time that their movements were restricted, indicating that China was interfering. I wonder what China is afraid of? Isn’t there a Chinese proverb that says, “If you don’t do anything wrong in normal times, you won’t be surprised if you knock on the door in the middle of the night”? What is the Chinese Communist Party afraid of when the WHO is already under its control? Has it done so many unconscionable deeds that it is difficult to cover them up?
On February 12, WHO Director-General Tan Desai announced that the investigation had been completed. He also noted that the team had carried out a considerable scientific task under “very difficult” circumstances, and was open to all hypotheses about the source, which required further analysis and research. Since then, the investigation report has been difficult to produce several times because of the need for all member states to agree. China being a member country and the source, of course it had to agree. Such an outcome was also envisioned by everyone, and there were no expectations for this result.
But when the official announcement of the findings came, it was still a surprise. After the WHO released the report of the international joint expert group on the traceability of the new coronavirus on March 30, WHO Director-General Tan De Se said that the “laboratory leak theory” of the virus needed further investigation. Liang Wannian, head of the Chinese side of the Joint Expert Group, however, reiterated the conclusions of the WHO report and China’s long-standing claim that it is “highly unlikely” that the new coronavirus originated from a laboratory accident.
The Xinhua News Agency published a report of the Chinese press conference on March 31, and the background photo of the conference hall reads “Press Conference of Chinese Experts on the Joint China-WHO Study on the Tracing of the New Coronavirus”. Several perplexing questions arise here.
First, when did the WHO expert group become a “joint expert group”? And is it a joint “China-WHO” group? China is at the forefront of the world, isn’t China a member of WHO?
Second, this joint expert group is 17 Chinese experts and 17 foreign experts, when was this decision made? This is very much in line with the Chinese Communist Party’s “one for one, one for one, one for red” tactic of “man on man”, where the Chinese side can easily control at least one foreign expert and immediately become the majority, and can decide the content of the investigation report.
Third, the Chinese side has another press conference, is you say your, I say mine? What is “joint”?
What the above situation shows is that China has already engaged in divisive activities within the WHO, is the WHO becoming a Chinese and a non-Chinese part? Or has the WHO changed the nature of the WHO by letting China decide everything? Or do the two sides have a tacit agreement to divide and conquer as needed?
This comes on the heels of a March 24 interview with CNN in which Secretary of State Blinken said, “The WHO will be issuing a report soon, and we have real concerns about the methodology and process of that report. The authorities in Beijing, for example, apparently helped write the report.” Blinken’s concerns have become a reality. The United States has restored funding to the WHO, and naturally will not allow the Chinese Communist Party to manipulate the organization while it willingly acts as an ingrate.
