The Philippines protested against the Chinese Communist Party for sending hundreds of fishing boats controlled by militias to gather in the South China Sea, the Canadian frigate Calgary also sailed through the South China Sea related waters this week, triggering protests from the mainland. According to the news, French nuclear submarines and frigates have recently been spotted in the South China Sea and East China Sea, and Britain and Germany are also planning to send ships to cruise the Indo-Pacific within the year.
Radio Free Asia reports that Canadian Defense Department spokesman Daniel Le Bouthillier confirmed that the frigate HMCS Calgary crossed the South China Sea on the 29th and 30th from Brunei to Vietnam. He said the ship traveled through the area because it was the most convenient route for navigation.
The newspaper quoted a Defense Department official, who asked not to be named, as saying that mainland authorities monitored the Canadian warship’s movements because the Chinese Communist Party claims sovereignty over its waters.
Stephen Nagy, a senior researcher at the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, said the Canadian warship’s trip to the South China Sea means that Canada does not endorse the Chinese Communist Party’s claim to sovereignty in the South China Sea, and indicates that Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy encompasses diplomacy, politics, defense, military, trade and culture.
According to the South China Sea Strategic Situation Awareness, the Australian Navy frigate Anzac and the Canadian Navy frigate Calgary recently left Singapore and Brunei respectively and entered the South China Sea.
The US and Europe have been actively strengthening their strategic positions in the South China Sea in recent years to maintain the so-called freedom of navigation. This year, the U.S. ships passed through the Taiwan Strait three times, two times engaged in the South China Sea freedom of navigation mission, the U.S. Navy ship strike group “Roosevelt” and “Nimitz” in the South China Sea in February to implement the joint training of dual ships.
