The left-media Associated Press reported Friday (March 26) that Washington officials say Joe Biden has invited Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping to the Biden Administration‘s first global summit on climate to discuss global climate issues. The Biden administration sent out a total of 40 invitations on Friday for the meeting, which will take place virtually on the Web April 22-23.
It’s unclear how China and Russia will respond to the U.S. invitation or whether they will be willing to cooperate with the United States on emissions reductions while bickering over other topics.
Biden’s list of invitations also includes leaders of European groups such as Bangladesh (Bangladesh), the Marshall Islands (Marshall Islands), and Bhutan (Bhutan).
The White House said Biden discussed the summit with British Prime Minister Johnson on Friday, and both leaders agreed on the need to maintain ambitious emissions reduction targets. It is understood that Biden did not speak with the leaders of China and Russia.
White House spokesman Jen Psaki said Biden expects to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga in Washington soon, but there is no timetable for an official visit. However, Kyodo News reported earlier that Kan may visit the United States from April 8 to 10, with North Korea and China expected to be the main focus.
The UN Paris climate agreement is good for the Chinese Communist Party and weakens the power of the United States. Under the Paris Agreement, the Chinese Communist Party has set an emissions reduction target of peaking and beginning to slow by 2030, with carbon emissions per person reduced to about 60 percent of what they were in 2005. That is, despite the staggering amount of emission reductions claimed by the CCP, the CCP will not actually have to or have to take any emission reduction measures until 2030.
Before the 2016 election, Trump said that climate change was a “hoax” caused by the Chinese Communist Party that hurt the U.S. economy and vowed to withdraw from the Paris Agreement if elected president.
After taking office, Trump announced his withdrawal from the Paris Agreement in June 2017, and according to the process, he will need to wait until after Nov. 4, 2019, to file a written notice of withdrawal, and officially withdraw a year later, at the earliest by the end of 2020.
The meeting, whether it is just talk or to make some progress, will test Biden’s commitment to see if he can prioritize climate change among political, economic, policy and Epidemic issues, said the left-media Associated Press. It will also be a public test of Biden’s ability to drive global policymaking.
When Biden first ran for president, he promised to invest $2 trillion to transform the United States into a zero-emissions economy by 2050.
