Rare side effect after vaccination: mouth full of metal taste

While arm aches and some discomfort are usually associated with vaccination against the Chinese communist virus (COVID-19), some people have experienced unusual side effects after vaccination: a strong metallic taste in the mouth that lasts for several days.

According to NBC 26, John Howard, 45, of Columbia, S.C., received his first dose of the Pfizer-developed vaccine last week and experienced a strange phenomenon just minutes after the vaccination – according to his described the experience as like having nickel in his mouth. He tried to get rid of the taste with coffee and then mouthwash, but 24 hours later, the metallic taste was still there.

“The metallic taste hasn’t diminished at all,” Howard said, “but I do wish it would go away, and I wish I could enjoy coffee normally.”

Dave Bischel, 52, of Sacramento, California, tasted nickel after both of his Pfizer shots. The metallic taste did not disappear until several days later.

“We’ve seen some people develop an unusual taste after a vaccination, usually a metallic taste that lasts for a few days,” said Dr. Buddy Creech, an infectious disease specialist.

“The metallic taste is of concern because we really don’t know the biological basis for it.” Nancy Rawson, vice president of the Monell Chemical Senses Center (USA), said.

Vaccinations are known to cause side effects such as sore arms, mild fever, headaches and fatigue. The CCLV vaccine is no exception, with some people reporting feeling flu-like symptoms for several days after receiving the shot.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website states that these side effects are a normal sign that the body is building up protective mechanisms and should go away within a few days. But the agency does not list the unusual taste as a possible side effect of the vaccine.

Dr. Creech said that while the metallic taste is disturbing, it is not considered dangerous and will wear off over Time.

Because abnormal changes in taste and smell are well-known CCP side effects, Rosen advises people to pay close attention to symptoms that occur within a week of vaccination.

“It is possible that these strange tastes are the result of SARS-CoV-2 infection, which happens to occur just before the vaccination or before the body produces protective antibodies after the injection.” “If you are losing your sense of smell, or have other types of symptoms, it’s best to see a doctor,” Rosen cautioned.
