State Rep. Cezar McKnight (R-S.C.), the bill’s lead sponsor.
Recently, South Carolina Democratic state Rep. Cezar McKnight (R) defied Democrats and stepped up to join 23 Republicans in supporting a bill aimed at stopping teenage sex change, preventing doctors from performing sex change surgery on teens or providing hormonal measures.
McKnight and other lawmakers last week co-authored the South Carolina Vulnerable Children’s Compassion and Protection Act, which aims to prevent underage sex changes, the Associated Press reported. The measure would restrict doctors from prescribing drugs, performing sex-change surgery or delaying puberty on children under the age of 18 and would impose felony penalties on doctors who violate the law.
State Rep. McKnight, the lead sponsor of the bill, represents South Carolina’s 101st House District. The Associated Press said the district is largely Democratic and two-thirds of its residents are black.
McKnight told host Carlson in an interview Tuesday (March 23) on the Fox TV show “Tucker Carlson Tonight” that such gender reassignment treatment should only be done on adults.
McKnight said, “I’m not anti-trans, I’m not anti-homosexual, I’m not homophobic, and I take offense to that statement.” “Just last week, I worked hard to put protections in the new hate crimes bill legislation to protect gays, transgender and lesbian (LGBT) people. I worked hard to include them. …… I don’t hate anyone.”
But he went on to say, “I mean to protect children. I believe that in South Carolina you have to be 18 years old to get a tattoo. So how can we endorse an irrevocable procedure on you at this point in Time? And what is this about? At the age of puberty? That’s ridiculous.”
McKnight added that he was surprised by the behavior from gay and transgender people who supported the bill.
“At first I was really scared, because I was like ‘Well, they’re about to make (me) the lead,’ and you? But there were people from my community, very conservative people, who told me, ‘I’ve never voted for you before, but I’m going to vote for you now.'”
He told Carlson, “I would say I caused a lot of trouble for myself. But all the opponents did was help me win the Republican vote in my district.”
McKnight is a member of the Black Caucus. He said the Democratic Party has yet to realize the reality that “African-Americans are much more conservative than white Americans.”
