The U.S.-China High-Level Dialogue was watched globally as the two sides opened with saber-rattling, with Chinese Communist Party foreign affairs chief Yang Jiechi defying protocol and breaking the rules. But after the closed-door talks, both sides claimed to have achieved their goals. Critics say the U.S. and China are playing along.
The U.S.-China dialogue opened on a tense note, with both sides trading accusations.
Secretary of State John Blinken’s opening statement lasted 2 minutes and 27 seconds. He briefly stated that China is a threat to global stability and that what the Chinese Communist Party is doing in Hong Kong and Xinjiang, as well as in Tibet and Taiwan, is of serious concern to the U.S. side. National Security Advisor Sullivan spoke for 2 minutes and 17 seconds, saying the U.S. does not seek conflict with China, but welcomes fierce competition.
Yang Jiechi, director of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, spoke for about 17 minutes in a single breath, strongly accusing the United States.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke for another four minutes or so, with both men violating the agreed-upon Time limit of about two minutes.
Afterward, Blinken asked the reporters to stay and the U.S. to add a response. He countered with Yang Jiechi saying that the U.S. return to the world and the strengthening of alliances is highly affirmed by many countries that share serious concerns about human rights in China. A confident nation, Sullivan added, is able to reflect on its shortcomings and continually seek improvement. This is the secret of the United States.
After the two men finished, Yang Jiechi broke into a tirade.
Yang Jiechi: “I will now say one thing, you are not qualified to say in front of China, you talk with China from a position of strength. 20 years ago, 30 years ago you did not have this position, because the Chinese do not eat this.”
The Chinese Communist Party wants to take advantage of such a world-renowned opportunity to say what it wants to say. The Chinese Communist Party wants to express an important core message that ‘the United States is no longer viable, the Chinese Communist Party is now on a par with the United States.'”
According to U.S.-based current affairs commentator Tang Jingyuan, Yang Jiechi’s words have made it clear that the CCP will not abide by the current U.S.-led order from now on, and that he has achieved his greatest goal by making Xi Jinping‘s statement that “China can now be on an equal footing with the world, and is now rising in the east and falling in the west” heard by the world.
Gobi Dong, an independent scholar in the U.S.: “If we take the whole process of Yang Jiechi’s meeting with Peng Pei O in Hawaii last year, including the so-called attitude shown by the Chinese media during that time, it was all weak and peace-seeking and even a bit servile. But this time, contrary to the norm, Yang Jiechi and Wang Yi both acted aggressively.”
Gobi Dong, an independent scholar and columnist in the United States, said that the U.S.-China talks in Alaska were unusual in that both sides openly ripped off their faces in total disregard of international etiquette, more like a play for the international community under some tacit agreement between the two sides.
According to Gobiton’s analysis, the Chinese Communist Party may have done this to cleanse Biden‘s pro-Communist image and do him a favor, since Biden’s Family has benefited from the Chinese Communist Party; the other is that Yang Jiechi’s speech was not for the Americans at all, but a political propaganda show on the international status of the Chinese Communist Party and the U.S.-China conflict.
Gobbledon pointed out that the show was a bit over-acted rather than genuine from any perspective. If the Biden Administration tolerates this kind of openly provocative insult that totally despises him and bullies him into weakness, it shows a tacit understanding between them.
Tang also said that in this meeting, the Chinese Communist Party is trying to test the Biden administration face to face, testing the bottom line of how tough the Biden administration is to the Chinese Communist Party, in order to set the tone for the Sino-US relations during Biden’s tenure.
Biden, when asked for his reaction to the talks, said, “I’m very proud of the secretary of state.”
Tang Jingyuan: “In the Trump era, we see that the Chinese Communist Party is very careful, Xi Jinping even personally flew to Argentina to meet with Trump in what amounts to a review, including when Liu He went to Washington to sign the first phase of the U.S.-China trade agreement, that basically made a review like a review.”
Gobbledon said that we need to further observe whether the Biden administration is a weak and deceptively incompetent regime. But the Alaska talks are destined to become a historical event.
Gobbledon: “When the international community scores points for both sides, the Biden administration is the one that loses points. This incident also opens a very bad signal: if the powerful United States are showing weakness to the CCP, then the CCP will do more and more evil in this world.”
Tang also pointed out that if rogue regimes like the CCP cannot be shown strength in dealing with them, these evils will only grow more and more arrogant.
