House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) speaks on Nov. 4, 2020.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) introduced a resolution Thursday (March 18) to remove Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) from the House Intelligence Committee. Swalwell was previously reported to be a threat to U.S. national security because of his affair with Fang Fang, a Chinese Communist spy.
McCarthy said, “Swalwell has had an established relationship with a Chinese Communist spy for years. His demeanor suggests that there is no longer a place for him on the top-secret U.S. (intelligence) committee.”
Previously, McCarthy has repeatedly called on Democratic leaders, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), to expel Swalwell from the House Intelligence Committee (HIC). But Pelosi said, “I don’t have any concerns about Mr. Swalwell.”
Last year, U.S. media outlet Axios reported that Fang Fang assisted Swalwell with fundraising during the 2014 campaign. Swalwell’s district includes a portion of California’s Bay Area. Since then, Fang eventually left the U.S. in 2015 after being subject to a federal investigation.
And Fang also allegedly targeted other Democrats in California. At the Time Axios wrote the story, Swalwell’s Family was still Facebook friends with Fang Fang.
In December 2020, Swalwell’s office told Axios that “Swalwell provided information about Fang to the FBI a long time ago. He met Fang eight years ago and has not seen the person in nearly six years.”
But McCarthy’s resolution declares that Swalwell “did not deny the publicly reported communication of the spy.” The resolution also said that the alleged Communist Party intelligence officer had raised money for Swalwell’s political activities and was involved in other publicly reported elements of trouble.
