U.S. media outlet Breitbart News reports that Democrats are now seeking federal legislation to overturn state voter ID laws, which 36 U.S. states already have in place. The so-called “For the People Act” has already passed the Democratic-controlled House and will soon be introduced in the Senate.
A new Rasmussen poll released Wednesday shows voters continue to overwhelmingly support laws requiring identification before voting, with 75 percent of Americans supporting photo ID before voting, including 60 percent of Democrats. Only 21 percent oppose such laws.
Eighty-nine percent of Republicans support voter ID laws, and 60 percent of Democrats and 77 percent of voters who are not affiliated with any major party also support voters showing ID at the polls. Black voters also favor voter ID, by a margin of 69% to 25%.
Voter ID cards are standard in elections in most other parts of the world, including poor, war-torn areas such as Uganda and Iraq.

Breitbart News said that many Democrats, including Durbin, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, have unanimously called for the filibuster to be eliminated or reformed so that the For the People Act can be passed with a simple majority vote and end voter ID. However, an overwhelming majority of the American people oppose parts of the For the People Act, at least with regard to the voter ID provisions, which, according to Rasmussen, go against the will of 75 percent of American voters.
