Ready-to-use new invention wearable device warning fruit spoilage

Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) made of patches can warn whether the fruit is spoiled.

Scientists have invented a new organic light-emitting diode (OLED) device that simply attaches to the skin and can be used to monitor human health indicators, or attached to the skin of fruit to warn of spoilage. It can be removed by washing with water when not needed.

Scientists have invented some light-emitting devices before, but they require implant surgery, compared to the technology published Jan. 25 in the journal Advanced Electronic Materials (Advanced Electronic Materials), which is much more convenient and useful.

The polymer material is quite thin and light, only 2.3 microns thick, equivalent to a third of the diameter of a red blood cell, and is soft enough to fit easily on human skin. The material is easy to print and manufacture, and can be applied to the application surface with water, according to the study.

The researchers envision a wide range of uses for such a device, such as affixing it to the skin of athletes to alert them of body dehydration; or to the skin of fruits to alert them when they begin to spoil; and in the medical field, affixing it to a patient’s body to glow with a warning when certain body signs change.

In addition, this device can also be affixed to the patient on the reverse side to demonstrate flexible use. “The reverse side is affixed to use, for example, can be combined with light-sensing therapy to target cancer cells.” One of the lead authors of this study, University College London (University College London) physicist Cacialli (Franco Cacialli) said.

When not needed, the device can be washed off with water and soap, without any surgical removal.

However, the researchers describe the material as easily degraded when exposed to air and does not last long, requiring an additional protective layer to be applied to maintain it. Currently affixed to glass, plastic bottles, paper, orange peel experiments have been more successful. In addition how to provide sufficient power for this sensor is also a difficulty.
