As the number of anti-Asian hate crimes across the United States surges, more shocking facts are becoming public. In Pasadena late last year, a homeless man, Oscar Villamil, 43, randomly attacked a passerby, killing Pui Gee Ng Lee, an elderly woman in her 80s. The suspect was charged with “murder” and “intentional wounding” in the case, and bail was set at $2 million. But the suspect refused to plead guilty, before he was already guilty of a number of crimes.
The Pasadena Police Department announced that it received a report at about 7:52 a.m. on December 29 last year that an elderly couple walking on the 100 block of Colorado Blvd East near the intersection with Arroyo Road had been physically assaulted. When officers arrived on scene and located the couple, they found the male elder in stable condition with injuries, while the female elder was unconscious and was transported to a local hospital by fire paramedics. Pasadena Police Department Homicide Detectives then launched an investigation and collected evidence and witnesses at the crime scene.
The investigation revealed that the elderly couple was walking on the sidewalk when the suspect provoked and assaulted the male elder for unknown reasons and shoved the female victim, causing her to fall and hit her head on the concrete sidewalk.
It was later confirmed that the 80-year-old Chinese woman, Peggy Lee, fell from the approximately 4-foot high extension step (ledge) and landed on her head. Her husband suffered minor injuries and was discharged from the hospital on Jan. 7.
During their investigation, agents identified the suspect as Oscar Villamil, a 43-year-old Hispanic man who fled after randomly attacking passersby. And his information had previously been documented by police and listed as homeless. Police and surrounding area law enforcement then began a search for the suspect’s whereabouts.
At 8:37 a.m. on January 5, Pasadena police were notified that the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department had located the suspect, Villamil, in the 700 block of Raymond Street South, near the Fillmore Station on the Metro Gold Line, and he was subsequently arrested by the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department and turned over to Pasadena police.
According to the L.A. County Attorney’s Office, the suspect is Oscar Villamil, a 43-year-old transient from Pasadena, who randomly attacked passersby, punching and kicking Pui Gee Ng Lee, an 80-year-old Chinese woman who was walking near the crime scene, and her husband for no apparent reason. The prosecution subsequently charged the defendant with murder.
Oscar Villamil, a repeat violent offender, was arrested on two counts of battery, according to the Los Angeles County court system, and the case is still pending. His previous convictions included vandalism, assault on an officer and child molestation. The suspect pleaded not guilty to the charge of “murder” when he appeared in court on January 27, and the case will be heard in March.
