A 19-year-old Chinese girl, Deng Gahi, who was shot in the head by the military in Wa on March 3, died in Myanmar. Reuters reported that Burmese authorities dug up her grave on May 5 to examine her remains, then put them back in the coffin and resealed the grave, presumably to confirm the cause of death.
State-run media on the 5th questioned the claim that “security forces killed the girl when they opened fire to quell the protest” and said “rule of law institutions” were investigating the exact cause of death.
Photos taken by residents on the 6th show that the cement of the grave had not dried, and that there were rubber gloves, boots, surgical gowns and protective shoe covers that had been discarded. A piece of cement appears to be stained with blood.
A nearby resident said at least 30 people came in four vehicles, two police cars and two military vehicles, using powerful tools to dig the grave and open the coffin. They brought the coffin up, took the remains out, put them on a work table and even put a brick under the head of the body,” he said. People who looked like doctors wore protective clothing and did something to the remains, I guess in touching the head. They took a small piece of flesh from the remains and showed it to each other.”
Photographs taken on the 3rd show Dungarhi bleeding from a head injury. At least 38 people died in the crackdown on the 3rd, the bloodiest day in Myanmar since the coup.
Burma’s military police used tear gas and shock grenades to disperse protesters in Yangon on June 6. U.N. Special Envoy to Burma Bernard called on the Security Council to take action against the Burmese junta for killing the protesters.
