Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was sentenced Monday, March 1, by a Paris misdemeanor court to three years in prison, including one year in prison, for corruption and abuse of power in the so-called “wiretapping” case. Two other defendants in the case received similar sentences.
The case was sparked in 2014 by a phone interception “wiretap” between former French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his longtime lawyer, Thierry Herzog.
The Paris Misdemeanors Court ruled Monday that Sarkozy, 66, had entered into a “corruption pact” with his lawyer, Herzog, and former senior justice Gilbert Azibert. The lawyer, Elzog, and former Justice Azibert were also sentenced to three years in prison, including one year in prison, by a Paris misdemeanor court.
